4 Dham Yatra 2026: A Practical Step-by-Step Travel Guide

The 4 Dham Yatra takes you to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, the four Char Dham shrines of Uttarakhand. This guide is about the practical side of the trip: how to reach Haridwar, what each stage of the road looks like, how to plan the days, how hard the two treks are, where to sleep and eat, what to pack and what weather to expect. It is written by our Haridwar team, who drive the 4 Dham Yatra route every season.

4 Dham Yatra 2026 in short

Before the detail, here are the basic facts every pilgrim should know. Keep this table handy while you plan your 4 Dham Yatra.

The four Char Dham temples you will visit

Each Char Dham temple has its own deity, height and way of reaching it. Knowing this helps you plan the harder days of the 4 Dham Yatra.

At every Char Dham shrine there is something special to do. At Yamunotri, pilgrims cook rice or potatoes in the Surya Kund hot spring as prasad and pray at Divya Shila. At Gangotri, they take a dip in the Bhagirathi and join the evening Ganga aarti. At Kedarnath, many book a Rudrabhishek and walk up to the Bhairavnath temple. At Badrinath, pilgrims bathe in Tapt Kund, offer pind daan at Brahma Kapal and visit Mana village, Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Step 1: Register for the 4 Dham Yatra

Char Dham registration comes first. It is free, and nobody is allowed past the check posts without it. You can register online on the official Uttarakhand yatra registration portal, through the "Tourist Care Uttarakhand" app, by sending "YATRA" on WhatsApp to 8394833833, or at offline counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Barkot, Hina, Sonprayag and Pandukeshwar. Step 2: Reach Haridwar, the start of the 4 Dham Yatra

Haridwar is the gateway to the Char Dham, and almost every 4 Dham Yatra starts there. It sits at the foot of the hills, has hotels in every budget and has the famous evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, which many families attend the night before they leave.

• By road from Delhi or Noida: 200–230 km, about 5–6 hours. Leave early in the morning to avoid traffic. See our Char Dham Yatra from Delhi page for pickup options.
• By train: Haridwar Junction is well connected with Delhi and most of north India.
• By air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport; from there it is a short drive to Haridwar or Rishikesh.

Step 3: Understand the 4 Dham Yatra route stage by stage

The Char Dham road route has five main stages. Distances are approximate, and hill roads are slow, so think in hours rather than kilometres.

Step 4: Day-by-day 4 Dham Yatra plan

This is the nine-day 4 Dham Yatra plan that works for most families. It leaves some slack for traffic and weather.

1. Day 1 – Haridwar to Barkot. Start by 6 am, lunch on the way, reach Barkot by evening.
2. Day 2 – Yamunotri. Drive to Janki Chatti, trek about 6 km to the temple, return to Barkot.
3. Day 3 – Barkot to Uttarkashi. An easy day; visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Uttarkashi.
4. Day 4 – Gangotri. Drive up, take a dip in the Bhagirathi, darshan, return to Uttarkashi.
5. Day 5 – Uttarkashi to Guptkashi. The longest drive; rest well for the trek.
6. Day 6 – Trek to Kedarnath. Sonprayag, shuttle to Gaurikund, then about 16 km on foot, pony or palki. Night at Kedarnath.
7. Day 7 – Kedarnath to Guptkashi. Early morning darshan, walk down, drive back.
8. Day 8 – Guptkashi to Badrinath. Evening darshan and aarti at Badrinath.
9. Day 9 – Badrinath to Haridwar. Morning visit to Mana village, then the drive down.

Add a day if you have elderly parents or small children. A buffer day is the best insurance on any 4 Dham Yatra, because a landslide or a late start can easily cost a few hours. If you are short of time, the Do Dham Yatra to Kedarnath and Badrinath takes only 5–6 days.

Step 5: Prepare for the two treks

Only two of the four Char Dham temples need walking. On the 4 Dham Yatra, Gangotri and Badrinath are reached by road right to the town.

Pony and palki rates are fixed by the administration and shown on boards at the start points. Kedarnath helicopter tickets are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra; many fake websites copy it, so never pay anywhere else. The Kedarnath Yatra guide explains the trek stop by stop. Step 6: Fitness and altitude on the 4 Dham Yatra

All four Char Dham temples stand above 3,000 m: Yamunotri about 3,293 m, Gangotri about 3,100 m, Kedarnath about 3,583 m and Badrinath about 3,133 m. Air is thinner here, so breathlessness and headaches are common on the 4 Dham Yatra.

• Start walking 2–3 km a day for a month before the 4 Dham Yatra.
• Seniors and anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure problems should get a medical check before the 4 Dham Yatra.
• Walk slowly above 3,000 m, drink water and avoid heavy meals before the treks.
• Carry your regular medicines on the 4 Dham Yatra with a copy of the prescription.
• If you feel dizzy or very breathless, stop, rest and go down if it does not improve.

Step 7: Stays and food on the 4 Dham Yatra

Night stops on the 4 Dham Yatra are fixed by the road: Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi (or nearby Sitapur and Phata), Kedarnath and Badrinath. Each has budget rooms and standard hotels; Kedarnath has simpler rooms and tents. Rooms near the temples fill fast in May and June, so book your 4 Dham Yatra hotels early. Food on the whole 4 Dham Yatra route is simple and vegetarian: dal, rice, roti, sabzi, parathas and tea. Meat and alcohol are not served near the Char Dham temples. Carry dry fruits and biscuits for the trek days and for long drives between towns.

Step 8: Mobile network, cash and documents on the 4 Dham Yatra

Mobile signal is patchy on the 4 Dham Yatra. BSNL and Jio usually work in the main towns, but there are long gaps on the Char Dham roads and on the treks, and UPI payments often fail. Plan for it on the 4 Dham Yatra:

• Carry enough cash for ponies, palkis, tea, puja and small shops.
• Share your itinerary and the driver's number with family at home.
• Keep photo ID, the QR registration pass, hotel bookings and emergency numbers on paper as well.

Step 9: Pack right for the 4 Dham Yatra

• Warm jacket, thermals, cap, gloves and woollen socks – nights are cold even in May.
• Raincoat or poncho and a small umbrella.
• Comfortable walking shoes with good grip, already worn in.
• Torch, power bank, water bottle and a small daypack for the treks.
• Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses for the strong mountain sun.
• Personal medicines, pain relief and ORS.

Keep 4 Dham Yatra luggage light. One soft bag per person is easier to handle than large suitcases in small Char Dham hotels.

Step 10: Weather and the best time for the 4 Dham Yatra

Step 11: Choose how to do the 4 Dham Yatra

There are three common ways to travel on the 4 Dham Yatra:
